But where do you turn to?
That was the question that vexed my mind back in late 2001, with my portfolio all red - showing deep losses in the face of the brutal bear market in technology stocks. I was reading the latest issue of Investor's Business Daily, skimming over articles related to "How to make money in the markets?". I had read and seen similar material since 1998, when the bull market was in full swing.
By 2000 I had begun thinking I knew something about investing.
But then came the bear market, and with one blow after another, my portfolio sunk, and with that, so did my pride. The effect on me personally was worse, and I stopped watching all financial news, stopped looking at my portfolio, and stopped talking about the stock market.
I knew I was doing something wrong with my investments, but I had no clue what.
Some Make Money all the Time!
But on this day, while going through the articles in the newspaper, I chanced upon a write-up about how a few select investors had been making money in the midst of this market!
I had seen such articles before, but on this day, it got to me.
There had to be a better way. I could feel it in my bones. After all, even in the great crash of 1929 there were those who made a bundle! Not to mention the bear markets of 1910s and 1970s, when while many were losing their shirts, there were others who were laughing all the way to the bank!
Clearly, I did not know investing.
The next 3 years were spent in intense study, gobbling up articles upon articles on stocks and bonds, burrowing through book after book on investing. I buzzed through Fundamental Analysis; rode up and down every squiggle and wiggle of Technical Analysis; became intimately familiar with the Investment Philosophy of giants of investing from Warren Buffett to William O'Neil. In short, the works.
Investing? - It is a full time Job!
At the end of this period, I came to the serious and somewhat disheartening realization that indeed I could make money in the markets using all these techniques - but not with the limited time I had to devote to it.
Between my full-time job and family, I could not make investing into a full-fledged career for myself. I just could not devote an extra 5-6 hours every day to investing. Investing was not my career!
When I let that realization sink in, I had a moment of intense clarity.
"If I could develop a sense of the markets in 2-3 years of study, there must be people who have a much more developed sense of the same."
And surely there must be some amongst them who would be willing to share their wisdom and insights with the rest of us.
The Search for the Finest
This began my quest for the finest minds in the world of investing who were willing to share their knowledge and recommendations with us. I was specifically looking for newsletter editors and authors who had:
- Decades of Experience (20+ preferably)
- Terrific sense of the markets
- Sterling track record of investing
- Were already so rich that they did not need to write for money
- Absolutely loved their work
I went through several stacks of investment newsletters. Some of them had a great near-term track record, but poor long-term records. Others had done reasonably well overall, but whose sense of the markets, in my judgment, remained suspect. And there were yet others who were totally inflexible regarding their judgment and methodologies. But there were a select few who had just the right mix and who were making their subscribers very rich indeed.

I subscribed to many, followed recommendations and if they did not fit my overall criteria, eliminated them from my list of "Best of Breed". After this intense process of elimination over a 2 year period, I culled together a list of authors and writers, whom I can say, without reservation, are the absolute best in their class.
